CLICK HERE: Juneteenth, A sweet celebration of freedom.
Juneteenth is just around the corner. With celebrations starting in 1865, the holiday is the oldest nationally marked commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. June 19th, (known as Juneteenth) is the day that General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, with some 1,800 officers and freed an estimated 250,000 slaves who hadn’t received the news of the war ending or their new freedom. The proclamation had been in effect for more than two years, but states under Union control had not complied.
Now, most states in the nation hold Juneteenth celebrations, including Missouri.
Each year, we host a sweet celebration to mark the holiday. I’ll be creating some of my favorite recipes from my hometown of New Orleans and a few from my grandmother’s Mississippi kitchen.
All of these southern classics will be available for purchase in our online store beginning next week.
This year we’re excited to be joined by Sofi Seck of Expedition Subsahara in their first pop-up of the year!
When: June 19 at 9 am-2pm
And
June 20th at 9am-3pm
Where: La Patisserie Choquette, 1626 Tower Grove Ave., St. Louis
Bonus: A portion of sales both online and from the pop-up will be donated to ArchCity Defenders, a legal advocacy organization that combats the criminalization of poverty and state violence, especially in communities of color, and Black Lives Matter.
When the Coronavirus pandemic began, Expedition Subsahara froze the education fund to support charities in Subsaharan Africa helping with Coronavirus relief. Following the Juneteenth pop-up, they will reinstate the education fund to support the building of a STEAM school in Senegal. More information can be found on the Expedition home page.
Join us in person and online! We can’t wait to see you! 💕
